Social Media Sites By Demographic

Flotown created his useful and visually appealing of social media demographics chart. What surprised me most is how huge of the 17 and under population still uses MySpace (it is by far the most used by this demographic). Like many others, I have basically written off MySpace as a music only site, but clearly this is not true. With that large of a key demographic, the tween and teens who are easily influenced, MySpace clearly can not be ignored.

Besides that I was surprised to see that significantly more women then men use Twitter. Not that I thought men had more, but I felt it would have been relatively similar. (I will refrain from making a sexist joke here, your welcome women).

Find Out What Your Web Site Looks Like On An iPad

This is more then just a fun site, it is could be an important resource for you. If you don’t have an iPad, and you are concerned about what will show up for iPad users, then go to this site and you are basically playing with an iPad. It doesn’t just give you a screen shot, it basically allows you to be on an iPad browser within your browser.

Oddly though, as I was playing with it I wanted to see what Twitter.com looked like, and what happened was odd. It didn’t show me, it just redirected my whole page to Twitter.com instead of just the iPad browser on the screen.

If you have any idea why this is I would love to hear why?

Canada’s Scare Tactic Campaign to Stop Workplace Accidents

WARNING: These videos are not for the faint of heart – if you are easily disturbed then do not watch these!

Canada must have been seeing a high number of workplace related accidents that caused serious injury and death because they really wanted to scare the crap out of everyone with these ads. The first one in particular shows the gruesome reality of what can happen in any job – even a chef if you are not careful.

They do not actually warn of accidents really though, but instead say there are no accidents, and call people to action to be extra cautious at all times. I think they are effective though because they don’t just show the incident, but try to make you understand how it can happen to anyone who slips up with one little thing.

These are scare tactic marketing at its peak.

Frequency Over Quality

I know this is an ironic subject for me to be covering since this is the first post I have written in a month, but bear with me. I was checking out some of my friends blogs (all casual ones like my own), and the ones with frequent – which I define as around 5 posts a week – were the ones that looked the best.

So I got to thinking about my own blog, which I don’t post on frequently, but tend to write more involved posts when I write. While there is nothing wrong with lengthy posts, if you aren’t writing them regularly then your blog starts to look stale, and is not inviting for people to return often, no matter how good the content is.

Daily content keeps people coming back.

This is especially important for all #GenYerForHire’s because when a potential employer finds you online because you will stand out. Anyone can create a blog, but not everyone can manage their time well and keep a blog updated.

While I do say frequency over quality is good, frequency is not a replacement for quality. Don’t think slapping a video up everyday counts, there still needs to be some insight you offer. If you already consistently post quality on your blog, then you probably don’t need to even be reading my advice! But if you are like me and struggle to find the balance, then give your blog from love and watch how well it will distinguish you.

5 #GenYerForHire Ways To Get Noticed

I have recently noticed some inconsistencies in my personal brand and image throughout my Web and social media presence. And since I will soon be officially entering the crowded market place, I though I would do some #GenYerForHire rebranding. Here are a few things I have done that you might want to take a look at yourself before you start applying for those high paying entry level jobs!

1. Consistent Names
I know this is not always easy to do, because you can’t always get the email or Twitter handle you want, but try to find something very similar at least. If you can do this it makes other recall you faster. After seeing a tweet from your handle, they will be able to recognize that name quickly on other sites. I recently changed a number of my urls and names to all be very similar. Find a brand name for yourself, and stick with it:

Twitter: @max_e_silver to @maxesilver (after reading aDan Zarrella post about the downfalls of numbers and underscores being in your Twitter handle)

Email: MSilver15@gmail.com to Maxesilver@gmail.com

Linkedin: linkedin.com/in/maxesilver

Facebook: Facebook.com/maxesilver

Blog: http://www.maxesilver.wordpress.com

2. Profile Pictures
Similar to the idea of having the same names on different sites, have the same picture. Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, Google Buzz, etc. This again will make you more easily recognizable. And like you, I have lots of fun pictures I like to put up for fun, but if you want to be recognized, make sure to put a clean picture of your face up.

3. Forget The Crap About ALWAYS Being Professional
This doesn’t mean post a picture of you and your huge bong (i.e. Michael Phelps), but this doesn’t mean you can’t ever say “shit” or make a stupid joke on your Twitter. No one wants to work with a boring person, so don’t be boring in public forums. Let your personality show through, while still networking and sharing professional information as well.

4. Don’t Be Afraid To Piss Someone Off
When you take the time to comment, or post something that is popular at the time, add strong worded. Piss some people off. Obviously you would rather say something innovative that will catch on, but that is very hard to do. So instead take a strong stance and stick with it, no one is going to notice that you said something that everyone else agrees with. Even if you piss off someone influential, it is better then not getting noticed at all.

5. Be Everywhere
Maybe you think Google Wave is stupid, or you think Linkedin just isn’t helpful to you. Thats fine, but don’t ignore ANY platform. Always look to extend your presence. You never know when a potential employer happens to love a certain site, and you just aren’t on it. How is that going to look? So even if you don’t like some Web platforms, get yourself on as many platforms as possible. Even if you aren’t going to update regularly, get your profile set up and complete with contact information.

Should I Change My Twitter Handle? Please Vote!

My Twitter name is a bit annoying to type, especially from a phone, so I have been thinking about changing it. But, I have had this handle for a long time. What do you think of changing Twitter handles? Is this a smart change, as well as easier to remember for people? Thanks for the help!

Missed Opportunity to Embarrass Toyota (Recreated)

When I first heard about this a few day ago, I literally laughed out loud. If you didn’t hear about this yet, when press finally caught up with Toyota’s CEO, he practically sprinted away, and right into his black AUDI! Nothing screams reliability more then a car company CEO on the run, right into a car his company didn’t make. While we are supposed to be believing his statements about trusting him that Toyota’s are still save cars, he doesn’t even deem them worthy enough to drive! Are you kidding me. I know there was a decent amount of chatter about this, but I feel like a picture or video would have been a serious viral hit! SO, to appease all those people like myself I created a reenactment of the scenario. And I know, it looks like I found this actual photo of what happened, but I assure you I created it myself!

"See you later suckers, enjoy driving your super safe Toyota's! BWAHAHAHA"

"See you later suckers! Good luck trying to get home in your TOYOTA'S! BWAHAHA"

Measure Your Twitter Penis Size – No Joke

First off, this is not spam. This is a site I found about a year ago, and just rediscovered. I don’t know how the metrics works, or how much method there is to the madness, but it is sure is funny. It is called E-Penis, and who doesn’t want to see their Twitter penis size!?!? And yes, you guessed it, its a Dutch Web site

My size is 19.5 centimeters. Are you bigger or smaller….try not to hurt my feelings

Pinyadda – Making RSS Sharing Social

Pinyadda is a Boston based start up that has taken your familiar RSS reader, and made it a cleaner, more community based service. They have only been up and running for a few weeks now, but the site runs quickly and seems to have few bugs.

The main draw for me has been the quick and easy sharing to Twitter and Facebook.

I have always used Google Reader, but not too often because it doesn’t allow me to easily share with my community. I know Reader does offer sharing with your followers on Reader, but that never caught on with me. Pinyadda allows me to not only share with my followers on the site itself, but just click on the Facebook and/or Twitter icon to share with my followers there at the same time.

While the sharing is what drew me in originally, I also have found myself enjoying the community on Pinyadda.com as well. Carrying on conversations greater than 140 characters can be valuable, and so far, even with the few followers I have, there has been a decent amount of interesting discussion. This is a strong focus of Pinyadda’s, apparent by the fact that your homepage is articles “Pinned” (their own term for share) by the people you follow. This is helpful when you are simply looking for good pieces of news and blogs, and Twitter is too cluttered to sort through and find some.

The Pinyadda RSS feed is set up differently then Google Reader in that it shows just the article title and source, and not snapshots of the articles themselves. I didn’t like this feature as much at first, because reading the article right in the feed is a very convenient service. But, it has grown on me some because it allows me to see more articles to choose from on my home feed page.

Overall I think Pinyadda provides a useful service for others like me who love sharing lots of interesting articles and blogs with their community in a quick and convenient way. I am excited to see what they do with the site and community management in the near future.

Luke Wilson for AT&T, how about Myth Busters?

If someone asked me to make a list of the top celebrities to be a spokesperson for AT&T, you know who would’t even be in my top 50, Luke Wilson. But there he is, looking overweight and in slow motion right in front of me.

I think in a retaliation to Verizon’s successful “there’s a map for that” campaign against AT&T’s coverage, they needed someone who would reach a broader demographic. I think they were trying to reach the older Gen Y, younger Gen X group with Luke Wilson, but I think they really missed the target. I see him neither as a particularly trustworthy or particularly objective spokesperson (not to mention I hated that this was a two part ad). See for yourself below

I think someone someone who would have been perfect for a retaliation campaign denying Verizon’s claims would have been the Myth Buster’s guys. They could have themed the commercials so that the two hosts were “busting the myth of Verizon’s coverage”. They also would have resonated as an expert in the field of technology and science, and are very recognizable to AT&T’s smart phone demographic.

What do you think of Luke Wilson as the AT&T spokesperson for Gen X and Gen Y? Who would you have chosen?
